Superior Coastal Sports was founded in May of 1992 under the original name Cascade Kayaks by John Amren & Jennifer Stoltz. We operated from our home just off Highway 61 and surrounded by Cascade River State Park..... With a van, trailer and 7 sea kayaks, we began offering guided kayak tours & lessons plus kayak retail store in the lower level of our home. Later we added week long kayaking ~ camping trips to Canada and Isle Royale National Park plus lodging ~ kayaking packages at Cove Point Lodge and Grand Portage Lodge. In 1998 we moved the business to Grand Marais into an old 1930's building we purchased and remodeled extensively located on the beach. After four years in our second store location, Jennifer and I went our separate ways. |

The Cascade Property was sold to Cascade River State Park and our first store in town we sold to Cook County whole Foods Co-op in October of 2001. I then made the decision to continue single handed which required building a new store and home in time for spring? I had plans to diversify knowing I would now need to be open year round... |

The metamorphosis was underway and Cascade Kayaks became Superior Coastal Sports for the 2002 season operating that first year from "The Box". It has been a work in progress these last four years but we expect things to be finished this summer including the opening of NeptunesCyberCafe our in-store espresso and internet cafe with planned indoor climbing wall...on hold until I can afford to spend more debt Basically we've become much more than a kayak retail shop & just need to get the word out. In addition to our suprising selection of kayak gear we've added so much more...casual clothes, gifts and a gallery as part of our new internet coffee shop.
