Lodging ~ Kayaking Packages .. Custom Only Gift Certificates are Available

Superior Coastal Sports'  began offering lodging ~ kayaking packages in 1997. With the development of the Lake Superior Water Trail in 1995 we began offering kayaking with camping trips along the pilot area of the new water trail. After a couple of seasons paddling past Cove Point Lodge on these camping trips we decided to combine a Lake Superior Water Trail kayaking experience with the convenient and comfortable amenities of Cove Point Lodge. It has become one of our more popular activities. Soon, we added another option with the Tip of the Arrowhead ~ Grand Portage Lodge package. The Grand Portage area...as you approach the Canadian border has some of the best scenery and kayaking on Minnesota's Northshore.

Our new approach is that we will only handle the kayaking aspect of a lodging/kayaking package.  Groups can reserve their guided kayaking tour for one of more days and be met at not only these 2 lodges.. but any lodge in between.  These lodges just happen to be located near to some of the better paddling locations.  We can also meet groups at State Park Campgrounds.

Examples of lodging/kayaking packages at the links below
Kayaking at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park

Cave at Crystal Cove

Any group lodging or camping for that matter in the area along the northshore from Split Rock Lighthouse State Park to the Canadian Border, who wants to add coastal kayaking to their experience can hire us for an all inclusive, guided day of coastal kayaking.. the rates are without lunch but for an extra charge, we can provide your group a lunch during the tour.  Click Here for Rates

Grand Portage ... Back to Top
Our Lake Superior Water Trail - Cove Point Lodge package begins with the participants checking themselves into their lake view rooms at Cove Point Lodge. This can be done anytime after 3 PM. Dinner on Friday evening is on your own. On Saturday morning at about 7 - 7:30 your guide will meet you at the Lodge for breakfast. After which you will be given your kayaking gear and prepare for the day in your rooms. We then drive our van to Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. After carrying the kayaks to the beach your guide/instructor will give a safety/technique orientation....then we will launch. Usually we will paddle to the west past towering headlands and bays with secluded beaches...one of which we will stop at for lunch. A buffet picnic lunch is provided. After lunch we will paddle past the base of the headland where the historic lighthouse sits. Continuing east we will paddle over the site of the shipwreck Medira....at the base of Golden Point. The wreck is too deep to see but when very calm some items can be seen near the base of the cliff. Usually we will then paddle back to our launch site and load the gear. Occasionally some groups with ideal Lake conditions have paddled on to the Lodge. We try to finish our kayaking with enough time to do some relaxing in the jacuzzi before gathering for dinner at the Lodge around 6:30 PM.....

On Sunday we usually meet for breakfast a little later as we'll have less preparations before paddling. We will be launching just east of Silver Bay paddling toward Tettegouche State Park.....along miles of tall cliffs and the Tettegouche Palisades....Exploring the sea arches and caves below the palisades. After having lunch at a nice secluded beach, we'll paddle past the Batism River Mouth and around Shovel Point to Crystal Cove to explore one of this area's tallest sea caves. We paddle back to the Batism River mouth to end our trip. Usually participants will drive to our take out spot at the Batism River as this is the end of the package. Remember...you have already checked out of your rooms when we leave this day to go paddling.

Note*  People sometimes book an extra night(s) before and/or after our package weekend. We try to end our paddling on Sunday around 3:30 PM so a drive to your next destination or the Twin Cities Area is not too late. The day's weather and Lake conditions dictate the kayak agenda for each day

Cove Point ... Back to Top
The TIP of the Arrowhead ~ Grand Portage Lodge package has a more remote feel than our Cove Point weekend. The scenery in the Grand Portage area is amazing. The area is also rich in history and there are good chances of seeing a variety of wildlife. Just like our other lodging package... the participants will check themselves in on Friday anytime after 3 PM. Dinner that evening is on your own. Your guide will meet you for breakfast in the Lodge restaurant around 7:30 AM. After introductions and breakfast your guide will hand out your gear and you can get ready for the day in your rooms while your guide unloads the kayaks ..........

The Little Spirit Cedar
After we visit the Little Spirit Cedar the most common itinerary is to head back into Grand Portage Bay and stop for lunch on the island in the middle of the bay. After lunch we'll paddle back to the Lodge and see if anyone in the group is too tired to continue paddling. If we feel up to it we might paddle west from the Lodge and check out the rock arch at Hollow Rock Resort. This is alot of paddling however and is rare. Another option is to make the 2 mile open water crossing to the Susie Islands for lunch. For this the group and Lake conditions need to be ideal as this involves a lot of paddling for beginners. Sometimes we end our paddling after lunch and tour the Grand Portage National Monument Stockade or hike up to see Minnesota's highest waterfall High Falls of the Pigeon River in Minnesota's Grand Portage State Park. There's a lot to see and do so we'll have no trouble having an enjoyable afternoon. Back at the Lodge we can check out the sauna and pool or relax until we have dinner around 6:30 or 7:00 ......

Bald Eagle in Pigeon Bay
.... Saturday we'll launch right from the beach at the Lodge. Paddling past the stockade of the Grand Portage National Monument... accross the bay and around Hat Point to visit the Little Spirit Cedar. Often incorrectly referred to as the Witch Tree. This historic 300 year old cedar is held sacred and it was customary to leave offerings of copper or tobacco for safe travels on the "Lake"

Example ... Tip of the Arrowhead ... Sunday ... Day 2
On Sunday we'll meet a little later for breakfast as we'll have less preparations before going paddling. Launch site for Sunday's kayaking is at the Canadian border about a half mile upstream from the mouth of the Pigeon River.  This lower stretch of the river is a great place for wildlife. On previous tours we've seen moose, bear, deer, cormorants, eagles, osprey, otter, herons and countless waterfowl. The tour takes us along the entire length of Pigeon Point, the very tip of Minnesota's Arrowhead..... We'll have lunch at a unique natural harbor near the end of the point. After lunch we paddle to the tip of Minnesota or further if making good time ...alternatively we may have lunch on the other side of the point at one of many cobble beaches all offering fantastic views of the Susie Islands Archipelago.

Note*  People sometimes book an extra night(s) before and/or after our package weekend. We try to end our paddling on Sunday around 3:30 PM so a drive to your next destination or the Twin Cities Area is not too late. The day's weather and Lake conditions dictate the kayak agenda for each day
