Althought we specialize in Guided Kayak Tours...our Expedition Equipped Touring Kayaks are available for rent by experienced paddlers for use on Lake Superior when not in use on our tours or if they are reserved in advance. With so much great inland paddling available in our area such as the well known..B.W.C.A.W....you would think we would rent canoes.. well we might soon but not this year. There are dozens of places in the area that do of course.. We encourage not renting kayaks for trips into the B.W.C.A.W. unless you are aware of landing and launching problems and know how to treat them right! A damage deposit will be required....

When renting our equipment...you will be required to sign our rental agreement of responsibility for your own safety as well as responsibility for the rented equipment under your care. Your credit card information will be on file as a security deposit and extra charges may apply if equipment is returned damaged, late or in need of excessive cleaning.

We Don't Rent Whitewater Kayaks. Northshore whitewater is advanced, dangerous and typically the rivers are only runnable in early spring with the snowmelt. Renters are not to use our kayaks for hazardous activities. You are not to use our Touring Kayaks to run whitewater. If you are paddling on Lake Superior you are not to attempt major crossings...such as paddling out to Isle Royale. We have had problems with these situations so excuse us if we seem too fussy on whether or not to rent to you!

We use a variety of coastal touring kayaks for our guided kayak tours which are also available for rentals to
experienced paddlers. We use Necky and Wilderness Systems kayaks with some higher performance and others better suited to larger people and/or beginners. Most renters sense they are experienced prefer higher performance boats. Rental package includes: boat, paddle, skirt, PFD, pump & paddle float

Our NEW Lightweight Inflatable NRS Bandit Kayaks are perfect for accessing some of those remote area trout lakes.....or to actually carry along in your pack while backpacking out on Isle Royale National Park to break from the confines of fishing from shore. Future plans will include sales and rentals of Outrigger Canoes. We are loooking forward to having our own OC 6 and putting together a local Grand Marais team....If you are interested in checking out this extremely popular team paddle sport and live in the area let us know. We hosted 3 consecutive Outrigger Canoe Regattas in 2003, 2004 & 2005 but have not since.. We hope someday to bring back the Regatta but it is a big production to trasnport these 40 foot long canoes from Duluth and Thunder Bay to Grand Marais.....

We may get a couple of regular canoes to have for rent and offering guided inland lake tours

WindRider Trimaran Sailboats

Those planning to rent our Windrider Trimarans should be familiar sailors with respect for Lake Superior. We offer Guided Windrider Sailing Tours if you do not fit this category. These fun sailboats are relatively simple to sail if you have any sailing background. We rent them for beach launch only. We don't rent them to be transported. They do not have motors and if you are becalmed you might end up paddling back so staying close to the beach is wise. Lake Superior is subject to conditions either too calm or too windy for Windrider sailing. 10 - 20 mph is ideal...gusty winds are never ideal but are quite common. The best wind direction for our beach is SW. Currently we have one Windrider 17 which can hold up to 5 people depending on weight and one Windrider 16 which is designed for one but can take a passenger on the side trampoline.
Rental includes: boat, PFD's, windbreaker jacket, paddle, drybags...including cell phone drybag and we recommend you bring yours if you have one. ...Extra person(s) charge is for either one or 4 hours....

Our first priority when considering the rental of our Kayaking Equipment for use beyond our control is your safety.....followed by concern for damage or loss of our Kayaks and other gear. Kayak touring is quite safe, but the environment of Lake Superior certainly can be dangerous..and fatal.  On our Guided Kayak Tours we are able to make the judgement on paddling conditions and the guide is knowledgable and trained to deal with problems such as capsizing in the cold water of Lake Superior. Knowledge, judgement and the ability to perform rescues should be considered fundamental when contemplating going out paddling on cold water environments such as Lake Superior.  Statements like..."Oh, I will just stay near shore" or "I have been in a kayak before and they are really stable....I'm not worried about tipping over "...indicate a lack of knowledge and experience we look for.  In recent years as more and more people have become interested in kayaking several paddlers have died on Lake Superior...including right out in front of Grand Marais' Harbor. Also...Kayakers have lost boats to the Lake even when fortunate enough to save themselves.

Learning opportunities are many...look around in your area...join a club or sign up for a course. We do not require that renters take instruction from Superior Coastal Sports.....but we do offer a variety of options to gain the knowledge and experience for safe kayaking that we require to rent our kayaks for Lake Superior. You could choose from our 1 day Intro to Coastal Kayaking...Northshore Kayak Weekends...Private Instruction...Free Kayak Rescue Clinic...Add-on Rescue Lesson at the end of a Half Day Tour.

Some Exceptions.  We will rent to someone who is going to be accompanied by a friend knowledgeable and experienced in performing kayak rescues. We will rent a tandem for the day when launched from our beach with ideal conditions. We will also rent our coastal touring kayaks for use on inland lakes...at least in summer when inland lake temperature have warmed and are not an immediate threat toward hypothermia...
